Description: I am familiar with the sound of the donkey’s bray, but what I didn’t realize that there are nuances in that burro voice that for the uninitiated are rather surprising! For instance, the jenny’s voice is softer than the jack’s. Also there are different versions of the bray, all of which communicate something unique. For instance, if the donkey senses danger, he’ll make a particular vocalization. When calling to her young, the mother donkey has a special sound she makes. The baby burro (the burrito!) has its own little sounds that it makes. And the jack has a very distinctive call if he is challenging another jack. There seems to be some mystery surrounding the beginning of the taming of the wild ass. Onagers are probably the wild asses that are referred to in the Old and the New Testament. It’s thought that tamed onagers were the animals that Abraham used. There are many varieties of the wild asses, and it seems to be still a bit obscure which of these are the true father and mother of the modern donkey. Even zebras are close cousins of the wild ass, possibly more closely related than either the zebra or the donkey are to the horse. The gold donkey earrings are for fun, and for anyone who is as fond of these funny little equines as I am.
