Description: Chickens have played an important role in civilizations in earlier times, even though it wasn’t always in the form of food. Hens and their eggs symbolized fertility. The Romans sometimes used hens to foretell the outcome of a battle or some other matter of concern. If a caged hen refused to eat, it meant bad luck and an ill omen. If the hens weren’t interested in their dinner, bad luck. It seems a rather silly system as a hen could either be starved or well fed ahead of time so the outcome could be influenced. Were the great Romans really so gullible? Superstition can make fools of us all, I suppose. I remember creating the model for these chicken earrings just like it was yesterday. They happen to be one of my favorite designs, and I think of them as my “dancing chickens”. Don’t they seem to be dancing a merry jig?
