Description: The Westie has also been known as the Highlander or the West Highlander. When it became a show dog it was given its official name. The story goes that a Colonel Malcolm went hunting with some brown terriers one day and aimed his gun at what he thought was a fox and he killed it. Unfortunately he discovered it was his favorite terrier he’d accidentally killed. At that moment it is said that he promised to himself that nothing like that would ever happen again. He was aware of the occasional white dogs that appeared in a Cairn terrier litter, and from that beginning he helped to develop the Westie as a separate breed from the Cairn. He didn’t call it the Westie, actually. The name he gave for it was the Poltalloch, named after the estate where he did his hunting. After many years of breeding he had developed an almost perfectly white coated dog. This story of the Westie’s development makes me wonder a couple of things. First of all, do the cairn litters still contain white dogs from time to time, and is the reverse true? Do Westie moms ever have a little black or brown puppy?
