Description:
The Scottie has been the subject of American artists’ interest at least since the early 1930s. Early plastics such as Bakelite afforded artists a medium to create fanciful jewelry and other items in that had color and warmth. I have photographs of the Scottie dog in such varied and useful forms as multi colored napkin rings in the profile shape of the Scottie body, a beautiful jade green bakelite key ring and a multitude of Scottie jewelry items.
I would bet that the interest in the Scottie as an object of affordable art in that period of time had quite a bit to do with the fact that the popular President Franklin Roosevelt had a Scottish terrier. I never did put two and two together until I started reading up on the history of that breed, but now it starts to make sense! The Scottie was absolutely ubiquitous in popular art at that time.
The profile of this breed is unmistakable, but when I was working on my Scottie design I discovered that although the look of the breed seemed superficially simple, it took a lot of care to create. I’m happy with the profile, and love that I was able to include the entire body in the design.
The gold Scottie earrings sparkle with energy and light, a wonderful testament to the liveliness of the breed.
