Description: Pugs are certainly famous dogs, and for good reason! Admired by royalty in countries as diverse as China and England, the pug has had a long and very colorful history. By 1877 the black pug was thought of as a new pug color. But the black pug was seen in a painting that was almost a century older. Queen Victoria herself had a black pug, but it had some white markings as well. At one time the mutation was not particularly in favor, but then breeders began to specialize in this color. Pug memorabilia is very popular among pug fanciers, and there is a lot of it out there! It’s probably still possible to find pug “things” from the Victorian era, but I would imagine they aren’t particularly cheap. Perhaps in England they would be more common. A good friend of mine spent many years in England as a young woman, and once brought back some wonderful tiles from the 16th century that she’d found at a little shop for not much money. That really impressed me! So maybe a Victorian pug figurine is in your future, should you desire one. I’m glad that pug owners like to collect pug things, and hope that my gold pug head earrings manage to make it into your collection, but you have to promise to actually wear it! |
