This breed was known to the ancient Egyptians. There have been statues of the breed found in the tomb of Rameses II who was in power in the 13th century BC. The current dogs look very much like the ones of long ago. It appears to be a pretty good design, so why would you want to change it?

Since Maltese are considered to be hardy, they make good pets for children even though they are in the toy group. They just don’t have a very delicate constitution. You do, however, have to be willing to spend a lot of time in grooming them. That is, if you want to have them look as beautiful as they are capable of. Part of why it takes so long to groom them is that the hair is delicate and must be very gently combed.

They are small dogs and weigh less than 10 pounds. Their coat totally covers the body and falls on the ground on either side of the dog. There are not any curls and no undercoat. The hair is supposed to be parted in a line that runs from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail.
