Description: Here’s something that amazes me greatly; there are dogs depicted on tombs of the ancient Egyptians that bear some resemblance to the basset hound. This might just be an example of convergent evolution, because every place else I’ve turned to learn about the basset hound mentions that it was developed in France! Oh well. It would be great if I were able to write about every one of these breeds just from my own experience, but unfortunately I’ve only met a couple of bassets my entire life. However, I found them very friendly affectionate dogs and I was left with a good impression of the breed. If I had to compare a basset hound to a human personality type, I’d say they most resemble a loving uncle, perhaps one from overseas who has a lot of wonderful stories to tell the kids about the old country. Can’t you just see that in his eyes? You know, someone who has done a lot of living and just holds onto the wonderful memories and lets the bitter ones fall by the wayside. I bet a real way a person could get an honest impression of a particular breed would be if you had several different breeds of dogs and you’d really be able to compare all their idiosyncrasies one to the next. Of course there’s the fact that within a breed, dogs vary quite a bit in personality as well.
