Description: All the cats I’ve ever been blessed with were pets, to be cherished but never to display their little kitty faces in a cat show. But the beauty of the cat has been appreciated by true fanciers since the 1800s. The first British cat show took place in 1871. Just a few years later the National Cat Club was founded there. I’m not sure when Americans became cat show people, but probably not too long afterwards. Pedigreed cats are now in demand, and of course have been for a long time. The last cat show I attended was as a jeweler in 1989. My husband, kids and I attended this event in Palm Springs, taking in the rare air of the cats who would be queen (or king, as it were). There were so many gorgeous cats, most of which were not too impressed by the proceedings and I’m sure would rather have been taking a nap on a sunny window sill. But, hey, these cats were actually earning their keep! There are so many qualifications that must be met for a cat to be a show cat. Eye color, condition of the coat, proportions of the body, head shape, length of the tail, all important to the judges.  My gold feline earrings may not be based on a champion show cats, in fact one is just a pair of basic short haired cat gold earrings, but I think these designs have many characteristics typical of this most enigmatic of animals, the cat.
