Cockatoo parrots can be spotted easily because of those wonderful crest feathers. Being very, very white as in the umbrella cockatoo doesn’t hurt, either! That reminded me of one of my neighbors in Mill Valley, California a number of years ago. She had an umbrella cockatoo escape from her home, and was understandably distraught. I remember seeing her pet bird alight in the top of a very tall pine tree in the next block. He looked so beautiful up there, but also quite far away. As I recall the story did have a happy ending and they were reunited. I’ll bet she kept his flight feathers clipped after that event!

Cockatoos are very noisy birds, and are also pretty active. They need a very large and very strong aviary that’s not too close to the neighbor’s house. I’ve heard it said anecdotally that they make affectionate pets. One of my sources said that the hand – reared chicks are best, but even they can become sort of moody as they approach bird adolescence. Have you ever known a teenager that wasn’t at least pensive once in a while? I’ll bet a little extra attention and love would work for a bird, just like with a teen human. At least there aren’t bird psychiatrists around to load up your pet with prozac like they seem to enjoy doing with the kids!
