Quite unfortunately, rhinos are having a tough time now surviving. They’re hunted for their horn, (unfortunately considered an aphrodisiac in some cultures) which is completely decimating rhinos in some areas of their range.

Rhinos in various forms have been around for a long time. Long ago there were many more varieties than there are now. The extinct rhinos of long ago were quite large animals.

There are 5 surviving species of rhinos, members of 3 families that are only distantly related to each other. I had noticed that the rhinos all had a different look, one to the next, but didn’t realize they were only distant cousins. Now that makes a lot more sense. The Indian rhino in particular has a body shape and overall look that is different from the others. All those big sections of body armor are particularly unusual looking.
