Description: Surely! I realize that I’m the one that created it and thus could be somewhat prejudiced. But even taking that into consideration, I think it is quite lovely. How about a little basic information on the group of animals known collectively as marsupials? No, I’m not entirely changing the subject. The koala bear, after all, belongs to this noble order of animals. (So does the endearing possum gold charm, part of my gold wild animal charm series.) In the 16th century, the first marsupials were brought to Europe not from Australia, but from South America. They were thought of as curiosities, which they certainly are. About 75 million years ago the first marsupial records were found in North America. In Australia, the earliest marsupial fossils are about 23 million years old. It’s uncertain whether the marsupials originated in the Americas or in Australia. Probably marsupials crossed the bridge from South America to Australia via Antarctica. Actually, there was a fossil marsupial found in Antarctica. Australia was isolated from the other land masses and allowed all this development of marsupial life apart from placental mammals that became all the rage in the other parts of the world. I always am amazed by the convergent evolution in some of the Australian mammals compared to the placental versions. But here you have a representation of one of the sweetest looking of all the Australian mammals, a marvelous little gold koala charm. |
