Description: Squirrel monkeys are inquisitive little monkeys that enjoy insects, which are their favorite food. Their group can contain over 200 members, so they have quite a society going! The core is the adult females and their babies. They are for the most part gentle monkeys and don’t squabble over territorial rights, even though they might avoid neighboring groups. They are curious! Sometimes they seem to appear out of nowhere to check out the humans below. They’ll even mover around so they can get a better look. The little ones are the most curious and usually stay the longest to get the best look at these weird looking bipeds. There have been reports of young monkeys “playing” with birds, by getting as close as they can to one that particularly has caught the monkey’s attention. Sometimes the birds will fly just out of reach, waiting for the monkey to approach again and then repeating the fun. These agile monkeys can catch bugs, even butterflies on the wing. The babies learn all these skills as youngsters while they are exploring their jungle home and probably carefully observing the adults.
