Description: I’ve been studying up a bit on giraffes lately. They are very interesting animals! The males, for one thing, seem to get along pretty well. Their ranges overlap without a lot of that male “I’m the biggest and best” stuff getting in the way. Well, it could be that they’ve already figured it out and just don’t have to fight about it. There is a dominance hierarchy. But because everyone seems to know his place already, there is a minimum of fighting. Mostly what they do is just stand as tall as they can to try and impress each other. Sigh. Now why couldn’t we just do that? Young lady calves generally stay in their mother’s home territories after they’re weaned. The young males form groups of their own and initially participate in the “necking” (which is a ritualized fighting just to size each other up by gently banging each other with their heads) just to determine the relative position of all the guys in their home range. The top giraffe gets all the girls, that is, if he can locate them. In fact, it is this factor of searching for the female giraffes that contributes to his mostly solitary existence.
