Description: The last time I saw an armadillo I was hiking with my husband, son and daughter-in-law here in Florida. We heard a racket in the bushes and followed the commotion to where a young armadillo was eagerly rooting in the underbrush searching for his lunch. I don’t think he even saw us! At least he didn’t seem terribly alarmed by our presence just a few feet away. The common or long nose armadillo mates in the summer here in the USA. In South America this same species mates in November through January, which is also summer. The egg isn’t implanted in the uterus for 2 weeks so the babies are born just in time for all the fresh young bug food in the spring. So why don’t they just mate a couple weeks later and eliminate all this fancy delayed implantation stuff? I guess they just never thought about it. When the four identical little ones emerge, their “shells” are still soft and kind of pink. In a few weeks they harden up. The armadillo babies are weaned in less than a month and between 6 months and a year they are ready to start families of their own. My gold facing armadillo charm would look adorable placed next to any of the others from my 14k gold wildlife breed charms. The elegant gold giraffe charm is pretty interesting don’t you think? |
