Description: I’ve heard many ferret owners refer to their pets as “weasels.” This may not be strictly correct, as both ferrets and weasels are members of the same family, mustelidae. Here I go getting all scientific on you. That’s just my inner zoologist talking. Polecats, which are close relatives of the ferret, are very versatile predators, and can live in a variety of different habitats. In the British Isles they live along the coast and also up into the hills. Sand dunes or sea cliffs, it makes no difference to these wily animals. The thing that I think is particularly fetching about the ferret is that little mask he wears all the time. Perhaps he fancies himself a sort of Zorro like character. Domestic ferrets look similar to the black footed ferret which is quite endangered, but they are not one and the same animal. Domestic ferrets have indeed been domesticated for a very long time. They could never survive if let go in the wild due to lack of water and food. Ferrets as part of my gold small pet charms home page may be an unusual concept, but I think they are beautiful animals and deserve the honor. I thought the same about my little gold guinea pig charm and there he is. |
