Description: Manatees can hold their breath underwater for about 15 minutes, but usually they surface every 5 or 10 minutes. They do much of their “grazing” at night, on aquatic plants. But occasionally they’ll reach out of the water and pluck leaves from plants hanging over the water. They probably just need a little land food to supplement all that eelgrasss. At one point in the 1960s there was an idea that manatees could be used to clear out the water hyacinth that was chocking waterways in both Africa and the USA. This plan, unfortunately, was not as successful as was hoped. Manatees just don’t take too kindly to being kept in a semi-domesticated state. I can understand that! Manatees can grow up to 15 feet in length and weigh up to 1500 pounds. It always seems strange that an animal can put on so much weight from a diet of green plants only. How could that be possible? The next time I go on a 30 day raw food and juice fast and start to shrink, I’ll think about the 1500 lb manatee that is following basically the same diet and expanding his girth by leaps and bounds. A manatee, unlike a leaping gold dolphin charm, is not your every day gold marine animal charm. I hope you find it as irresistible as the real thing! |
