Description: The origin of the modern pig is a delicately athletic looking fellow known as the European wild boar. To me, this handsome fellow looks nothing like the overfed pink hogs with the curly little tail (such as my pig charm). He looks almost handsome, neat and trim. He is probably about half the size of a small modern domestic pig. But sure enough, this is the same species. In fact, it can mate with the modern hog, which is quite incredible to me as I look at this picture of him.
Now there are dozens or maybe hundreds of pig breeds. There are the American pigs which seem to get fat faster. (OK you Europeans, no fat American jokes.) They are mostly fed on corn, and consume, amazingly enough, about half of all the corn we grow.
Hogs have an intelligence that many who raise them for slaughter may in some way be aware of. It’s said that they are at least as smart as the family dog, and sometimes as affectionate, at least if they are allowed to show their true nature. It is at times like these, when I confront various things that are at least true to me, I feel glad I don’t eat meat.
And so I present my gold pig charm as something to honor this common swine with, who has done so much for mankind over the centuries. For further variety see my home page for farm animal charms done in gold where you'll find a very wooly gold sheep charm amongst the group.
