Description: Goats and sheep, scientifically speaking, are pretty closely related. Both animals chew their cud and have similar looking faces and bodies. I had some neighbors in Rough and Ready, California (Yes, that’s the real name of a town!) who raised a herd of animals on their property that I was positive were goats. One morning I had a casual conversation with the owner and mentioned how attractive her goats were. She looked at me rather haughtily and informed me that these animals were not goats, but some rare breed of sheep. Now that I know a bit more about goats, I would’ve spotted them correctly. The ram had two gloriously curving horns on each side of his head. A dead giveaway! Adult female goats are known as nanny-goats. The male is a buck or a billy-goat. They mate in the autumn and the kids are born about 5 months later. They can run pretty soon after birth and soon after that are climbing with the best of them! I give thanks that human babies take a little longer to be up and around. At least we have more than a few hours after birth to put the breakables out of reach. I’m pleased to have this frisky goat and my sweet gold pig charm to offer to those customers who love farm animal charms in 14k gold! |
