The ancestors of the Weimaraner seem to be a reddish tan dog called a Schweisshund, which is a relative of the bloodhound. That must be where he gets his excellent tracking ability. The other bloodline he carries is that of the English and Spanish Pointer. Where he got that beautiful almost “taupe” color is open to debate.

For a long time the Weimaraner was a carefully guarded dog breed, the property of the Thuringian noblemen only. A breed club that they started wasn’t allowed to sell dogs to anyone outside this very exclusive group. They even had people called “breed wardens” that were in charge of making sure that all the puppies measured up to the breed standard. 
This standard was so rigorously guarded that no more than 1500 Weimaraners were in existence in all of Germany.

In 1929 the very first Weimaraners were brought to the United Staates by an American who was a sportsman who had become a member of the Weimaraner Club in Germany.  Now the restrictions have been lifted and this dog has become fairly popular.
