Description: The Shih Tzu is a small dog that takes readily to life in an apartment, as long as it’s allowed a lot of play and romping about. This may be a proud dog with a noble and ancient history, but it loves a good doggie tussle as much as the little mutt next door. This is one energetic little dog! The history of the Shih Tzu may go back beyond its revered days in China and Tibet. It’s possible the origin of both the Lhasa Apso and the Shih Tzu were in the Byzantine Empire, and were given to both the Emperor of China and the Dalai Lama in Tibet over 1,000 years ago. In Asia Minor fossils of dogs have been uncovered that are of similar structure to both these dogs. There is even speculation that the mysterious beginnings of another toy dog, the Maltese, had its beginnings with the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso. I’m intrigued by the fact that actual fossils were allegedly found of these dogs, which points to a very early beginning indeed. Perhaps they were not actually fossils but ancient bones. That would make a lot more sense. But then maybe I’m wrong. Were there really Shih Tzus running around on the prehistoric planet Earth? I find that just a wee bit hard to swallow.
