Description: Pugs are an ancient breed, and back then the wrinkling on their forehead was sometimes called the prince mark, especially on some of them. This is because the wrinkle mark resembled the Chinese character for the word “prince.” Is that not charming? Just about 375 years ago the pug entered Holland, brought by the crew of the Dutch East Indies Trading Company. They dubbed the dog the “Chinese Mastiff” and there began the belief that the pug was a miniature of the great Mastiffs that were found in China. Maybe that is the truth of the matter, but it’s hard to say all these centuries later. But the pug was a big hit in Holland, and women loved to walk around with their little Chinese pugs. They ended up with a few more nicknames, such as the round header, black faced monk dogs, and monkey faced Chinese dogs. Pugs were loved by royalty and there is a story of a pug that saved the life of a king of Holland, William the Silent, when he was about to be assassinated in his tent one night. The little pug dog awoke him just in time. The dog was dubbed a hero and received many accolades for this act of bravery. So the pug has a long and noble history, and I think he deserves to appear as a gold pug charm! I even made a second design - a 14K gold charm of a pug face. These will go with many others from the gold dog breed charms home. |
