Description: This breed has been popular from ancient times. There is argument as to whether it originated from the Island of Malta or the Sicilian town of Melita. It seems that evidence does point in both directions.
The Roman governor of Malta was said to have a Maltese. He was Publius, and he wrote of his little dog in the most glowing words. He said his dog (named Issa) was “more frolicsome than a sparrow and purer than a dove’s kiss.” Wow! It seems the fans of the Maltese go way back!
There was an artist named Sir Edwin Landseer who painted a Maltese in the 1700s and titled his painting “The Last of the Race.” It’s a good thing for all the Maltese lovers in the world that his prophesy was false. Or perhaps it had some other meaning that has been lost. Maybe the owner of the Maltese in question was on her death bed and would no longer be pampering any more Maltese in that life. It’s hard to say.
After World War I the breed seemed to be threatened with extinction, but luckily it rebounded. It would have been a sad thing to lose a dog that had been around already for almost two thousand years.
The gold Maltese charm is yours to ponder now… And it's fun to select other designs for your bracelet from the cast gold dog charms collection. The wonderful pet paw charm in gold works with all breeds.
