One of the most famous of all Labrador retriever owners was none other than the famous crooner Bing Crosby. I always knew there was something about that man that was very appealing (besides that glorious voice, of course).

Labradors were made for water, and even have webbing that goes all the way to the outer joint of the toes. Lab puppies are said to be as happy splashing about in the ocean as they are playing on dry land. The adult dogs swim powerfully through the waves. Even cold water does not deter them.

Labrador retrievers originated in Newfoundland, and some say the big breed of that name is part of this breed’s ancestry. They didn’t come from Labrador the Canadian peninsula, despite their name. I realize that Newfoundland and Labrador are right next to each other, so it doesn’t seem impossible the first labs had something to do with the area of Labrador, but this is what the references all seem to say, so I’m sticking with it.

Hunters love them for their abilities in the field, which are legion. They truly love their masters, but behave more like equals than slaves. They don’t mind being commanded to do something, but it needs to have a good reason.
