Description: The exact parentage, with the exception of the generally accepted English bulldog, is unknown. Once in a while I’ve noticed a pattern emerging in some of the more mysterious breeds where the development of the dog breed is thought to be at some point in history, say the 1800s.Then, oddly enough a painting or some other artwork is found from a much earlier time with an image of the dog in question portrayed. What could this mean? Well, such is the case with the mysterious little Frenchie. There is a bronze plaque from 1625 inscribed in Spanish with a spitting image of the French bulldog on it! It even has a name, being titled “Dogue de Burgos”. The solution to the mystery may be forever shrouded in the mists of time. I suppose it should be enough just to have this little dog a part of our lives now with no worry about where he sprang from. Some other French bulldog vital statistics are that he is officially a “non- sporting” dog with an average height of 12 inches and the weight of about 25 pounds. The coat is smooth and he has a cute little screw tail, which I hope he is proud of and doesn’t consider an embarrassment! He is one of those dogs with the flat sort of muzzle that is better kept inside during hot weather. And furthermore, a little gold French bulldog charm would be just the thing! |
