Description: Did you know that even before the many fine aphid eating qualities of the ladybug were realized that they were looked upon affectionately?
Apparently the very name ladybug, which comes from the British version of the name, “ladybird”, comes from the Middle Ages. Somehow the little bugs were associated with the Virgin Mary and were dubbed “beetles of Our Lady”. I’m sure there’s an interesting story there, but perhaps it’s been lost in time.
The evolutionary survival reason behind the ladybug’s bright coloration is for warning purposes. Ladybugs, apparently taste bad. Makes me kind of wonder what, exactly, makes for a good tasting bug.
Many people have heard the folk song that has the words “Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home. Your house is on fire and your children will burn”. This refers to the custom in England of burning the hop vines after harvest which were covered with ladybug larvae.
Apparently there is another line in the same song that I wasn’t familiar with that goes “Except little Nan, who sits in a pan, weaving gold laces as fast as she can.” This refers to the brightly colored ladybug larvae weaving a case to pupate in.
I don’t think there are too many bugs that have popular folk songs written about them!
If you, like I, feel fondly towards the little ladybug, you can wear these ladybug post earrings with pride!
