Enamel bug necklaces are perhaps a surprising idea, and one that only such an artist as myself might think up. Meaning an artist who actually likes bugs. I may be somewhat unusual in this regard. Because not only do I like ladybugs and butterflies, but I enjoy most beetles, praying mantises, katydids, grasshoppers and the like. Not that I’d particularly enjoy having them scampering about my house, but watching them and learning about their habits is actually enjoyable for me!
I’ll bet most little kids like bugs. The problem is at some point, especially for little girls, the idea that insects are repulsive gets into their heads. Or that bugs are scary, unclean, dangerous, etc. That transition from fascination to abhorrence never occurred with me, possibly because my mom was a country girl who loved all animals, even bugs. That was nice- I hate the idea that one whole category of animal life would be off limits to me simply because of such a prejudiced viewpoint.
I tried to pass that interest in all life forms down to my own children. It’s now rewarding to see my little two and a half year old grand daughter playing with bugs. In Florida, however, there are a few nasty customers, like fire ants and mosquitoes to look out for.
So wear an enamel bug necklace in good health, and think a little about those six legged critters that help keep the earth in good shape!
