Description: The texture reminds me of those smooth colored stones that have been polished by running water over a few thousand or so years. They’ve really just been painted, but that’s what I think of when I hold one in my hand. My black and gold dragonfly enamel earrings have that same feel; you'll see other styles over at insect earrings in enamel. Lucky for us, ladybugs are prolific breeders. They lay about 200 neatly lined up orange eggs at a time on the underside of a leaf. Mama bug is good at spotting a cradle for her eggs that has an abundant food supply (that is, aphids) nearby. The eggs hatch in about 7 days. Since they’re so busy growing, they have voracious appetites and really get to work on the aphids. This is the larval stage of the ladybug’s life cycle, and it lasts about 3 weeks. Believe it or not, they can eat several hundred aphids during this period. Next comes the pupal stage, which is the only time this hungry little bug stops feeding. Once the adult ladybug emerges, the appetite returns! Beware little aphids. From egg to adult ladybug takes anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks, so it’s possible that more than one generation can be produced during a summer. It’s a good thing that ladybugs are actually beneficial, otherwise I might feel guilty that I think of them with such affection. I think these earrings would be great with a black, red or all white outfit. I know a lot of people have clothing decorated with a ladybug print. An outfit like that would just beg to be paired up with a pair of my enamel ladybug earrings! |
