These lovely enamel bird earrings have only begun to hatch in The Magic Zoo. As with most things I create, my head is full of more ideas than I am able to get to in a finite amount of time.
But I do my best!
I especially love seeing the results of these wonderfully painted pewter bird earrings, once they return to me from my New England shop. The painted shine on these animals seems to reflect the iridescence of feathers in the real thing.
And having them dangle from the ear completes the illusion of a flying bird. It’s just works well on so many different levels.
Long ago in an era that now seems like a different lifetime, I created parrots and toucans from colored clay in a small, un-airconditioned house in Florida. This was the 1980s, and I was so fascinated by what I was doing that I paid little attention to the humidity and heat.
My kids enjoyed it too, and begged me for little scraps of clay so they could make their own bird designs. Every Christmas I still hang a wonderful little parrot ornament on the tree that my daughter Cedar made when she was four years old.
But for the first time in my life I was making a living as an artist! This felt good.
And since that time I’ve had a special place in my heart for bird jewellery.
