I was recently at a trade show and heard an interesting story about flamingos in the Miami area several years ago. The Hialeah race track had a breeding population of flamingos, who lived in an area in the middle of the track. The veterinarian who told me about this worked there as a horse vet in the 1980s.
She said that when the birds were not in breeding season, they were "encouraged' to fly around the area when there was a race. I assume this was before the race started, as a large flock of pink flamingos might be a little distracting! That would certainly have been something to witness in person.
She was wondering what happened to the flamingos there, as the race track is no longer in use, apparently. Hopefully the native flamingo population will be left alone there. I had no idea we had a breeding population of pink flamingos in this country - that seems like something that should certainly be preserved.
I'm doing my humble part by designing flamingo jewelry that will at least remind people of the presence of these wonderful birds. They exist in reality, not just as joke lawn decorations, after all!
I think flamingos are gorgeous, and I'm happy to have a lovely enamel flamingo earring design to share with you.
