The English Springer spaniel has a long and noble history. It is said to be the founding breed of all the English hunting spaniels. That’s quite an honor! It was popular as far back as the Renaissance, and can be found in paintings and tapestries of the day. In the early 1700s it began its American popularity.
This beautiful breed is cheerful and courageous. It makes a wonderful family pet because of its friendly nature. It supposedly has a personality very similar to the cocker spaniel. It makes a good guard dog, but I can hardly imagine that being true for a cocker spaniel as well, supposing their personalities are so similar.
This dog definitely requires room to run and exercise, especially if it’s not going to be working as a retriever, because it has a tendency to get a bit overweight. But it can also prosper in a city environment, I would guess with enough exercise to keep it in shape.
