My Newfoundland jewelry offering may be a little meager, but one of these days I’ll create some more Newfoundland designs in I promise. Now for some Newfoundland history. The breed comes from Newfoundland Island. Makes sense. The ancestors of the breed came here with early British and French fishermen. It’s speculated that the Newfie stock includes the Great Pyrenees. However the Modern Newfoundland was bred in England and probably includes retriever parentage. At any rate Newfoundlands love the water and are great rescue dogs. They’re also strong dogs and have been used in the past to pull carts and to hunt. I lived near a gentle Newfie for a while in California. Mostly I remember a big fluffy bear of a dog that liked to keep the miniature goats company in our neighbor’s little farm yard. He also watched my daughter and I as we trudged back up the dirt road to our house after retrieving the mail from our country style mail box. I’ll admit it was kind of comforting to have this big black and gentle dog share the neighborhood with us. Newfoundlands come in many color variations. Black, brown or grey, with a little white in certain areas. I’m afraid the only Newfoundland jewelry I have at the moment is this little lapel pin, but I will get back to the Newfie someday. I promise!
