| About Our Cattle Dog Jewelry |
| My cattle dog jewelry currently consists of a pin pendant design. The Australian cattle dog or heeler, as it’s also known, was developed primarily by crossing a dingo with a collie. My sources don’t say what kind of collie, though. But the fact that it has dingo ancestry is fascinating to me. That makes sense as the dingo is thought to have been a domesticated dog, brought to Australia by the early Aborigines which then reverted to a feral state. Apparently some modern day Aborigines still use the dingo for hunting. When I look at a photograph of a dingo, I can certainly see some of the Cattle dog look there. Apparently they have the fearless ability to challenge cattle when necessary and even lie down when the cattle herd is moving so they aren’t spooked. Amazing! I’ve heard anecdotally that they can sometimes live up to the name of heeler by attempting to nip their owners on the heels to get them to move in a certain direction! The name “heeler” is an early Australian name for a cattle dog, maybe because of this nipping on the heels habit? This is conjecture, but if someone reading this wants to set me straight, I’m happy to listen. I hope you find this cattle dog jewelry offering attractive and fun to wear. Someday I’ll even make the matching earrings! |
