My bulldog jewelry was one of the first dogs I decided to represent in precious metal. It was fun to create that ugly but cute little mug and it came out looking great that way.
English bulldogs are a descendant of an ancient breed known as the Asiatic mastiff. The modern bulldog was developed in Great Britain. This next bit of information is a hard one to swallow, but I know it’s true because I’ve seen it in so many places. This stocky little dog was used in the sport of attacking bulls in arena combat! I say how is this possible? Those bulldogs of a bygone time had to be different.
Well, I did just read that until the nineteenth century bulldogs were aggressive and bloodthirsty. It’s said that the Romans had a decree that wouldn’t allow you to take a bulldog through a public place, even on a chain. What I want to know is WHEN in Rome did this occur? I thought they were developed in England! Perhaps they’re talking about the bulldog’s ancestor. I believe I will leave this subject of which I know just enough of to be dangerously confusing both to myself and my readers.
The good news is that I do have bulldog jewelry in my store that you can order in silver, gold and pewter. And now I will be quiet |
