I was reading a little tidbit about this breed that I enjoyed. Apparently bull mastiffs were bred to accompany the gamekeepers in 19th century England on their rounds at night in order to put a stop to poaching. When violators were caught, the combination of an especially good sniffer, power and speed allowed them to attack the interlopers. The gamekeepers would often have the mastiff pin down the offender without actually hurting him. The dog probably just thought he was playing a version of fetch, only with a human being.
Bull mastiffs are used frequently as guard dogs. According to one of my sources, bull mastiffs in South Africa are used as watchdogs by the Diamond Society of South Africa. The bull mastiff owners I’ve met love them as loyal pets. But I’ll bet they could put the fear of God into a would- be home robber due to their size and strength.
Their personality seems to be a well-balanced combination of affection and fearlessness.
