I’ve always enjoyed creating cockatoo jewelry. There’s just something about that head dress that I find so charming.
Although these cockatoo charms, pendants earrings and pin pendants were modeled after the lovely umbrella cockatoo, the design could probably pass as a Moluccan cockatoo as well. When you are creating something in metal, it’s even more important to capture the feeling of the animal since there’s an absence of color.
I’ve heard it said that umbrella cockatoos are extremely affectionate birds. They certainly have a sweet look about them. The other thing I’ve heard about them is that they tend to be a “one person” bird. They are quieter than many birds, and they can live a long time. Parrots are a pet that are often included in a will since they often outlive their owners.
Umbrella cockatoos as well as Moluccan cockatoos are native to the Moluccas, a Pacific island. It must be incredible to see a flock of these beautiful birds, either white umbrellas or the lovely peach colored moluccan in their native habitat, soaring through the trees and calling to each other.
All cockatoos have long crest feathers that they can raise when they get excited. Even the rose-breasted cockatoo can raise his stubby little pink head dress!
