Another species of Cockatoo that I think very handsome is the great palm cockatoo, with the red patch on the cheek. These cockatoos live in northern Australia and New Guinea, as well as some nearby offshore islands. They live in small flocks in tropical forests. An artist friend of mine who specializes in bird paintings told me about some black palm cockatoos she visited with in a park in Australia- a thrilling experience, according to Carol!
I just read a great description of the palm cockatoo's morning ritual. They don't leave their night time roost until the sun is high. Then they gather in one tree and bow to each other while raising their crests and extending their wings and tails. More cockatoos join the group and then the birds get really excited! They give a loud call of two notes every time they bow. Finally, they leave the tree to forage. During feeding time, one of the birds stands guard over the flock, ready to sound an alarm if necessary. When it's held that position for a while, it flies down to feed himself, assigning another bird guard duty!
Sometimes I get so interested in the animals I make and any related critters that I just can't help myself. I want everyone to know these things that fascinate me so much.
This gold cockatoo pin pendant is really a striking piece of gold jewelry.
